Scoring System & Quiz Rules

Everything you need to know about how scores are calculated, how leaderboards work, and how rankings are determined on KIDB.

How Scoring Works

KIDB uses a straightforward yet strategic scoring system that mirrors Kerala PSC exam patterns — rewarding knowledge while penalizing random guessing. Every practice test on the platform follows the same scoring rules, so you always know what to expect.

The scoring system is based on three simple outcomes for each question: correct, wrong, or unanswered. Each outcome has a fixed point value, and your total score is the sum of points across all questions in the quiz.

Point Values

+1.00
Correct Answer

Full mark for each question answered correctly

-0.33
Wrong Answer

Negative marking for incorrect selections

0.00
Unanswered / Skipped

No points gained or lost for skipped questions

Why Negative Marking?

Negative marking is used in actual Kerala PSC exams, and KIDB mirrors this to give you realistic practice. Here is why it matters:

Discourages Random Guessing

Without negative marking, players could randomly guess all answers and statistically get 25% correct (assuming four options). Negative marking makes random guessing a losing strategy, ensuring that leaderboard positions reflect actual knowledge.

Rewards Confident Knowledge

The system rewards participants who truly know the answers over those who take many shots in the dark. This makes the competition fairer and more skill-based.

Adds Strategic Depth

With negative marking, every question becomes a strategic decision. Should you attempt the question or skip it? This adds a layer of strategy that makes quizzes more engaging and competitive.

The Mathematics Behind the -0.33 Penalty

The penalty of -0.33 (or -1/3) is not arbitrary. With four multiple-choice options per question, the probability of guessing correctly is 25% (1 out of 4). The expected value of a random guess is:

Expected Value = (1/4 x +1.00) + (3/4 x -0.33) = +0.25 - 0.25 = 0.00

This means that on average, random guessing yields zero points — exactly the same as skipping. The scoring is mathematically calibrated so that guessing is neutral in expectation, but the variance means you could end up worse off. Players who know the answer will always outperform random guessers over multiple questions.

Score Calculation Examples

Here are three different scenarios for a 10-question quiz to illustrate how scoring works in practice:

Player A (Cautious)

Correct: 6
Wrong: 0
Skipped: 4
Total: 6.00

Played it safe, only answered questions they were confident about.

Player B (Balanced)

Correct: 7
Wrong: 2
Skipped: 1
Total: 6.34

Attempted most questions, made educated guesses on a few.

Player C (Aggressive)

Correct: 8
Wrong: 2
Skipped: 0
Total: 7.34

Attempted all questions, high accuracy paid off.

In this example, Player C wins despite getting 2 wrong answers because their higher correct count (8 vs 7 vs 6) more than compensated for the penalties. The takeaway: attempting more questions is worthwhile if your accuracy is high.

Leaderboard Ranking System

After every quiz, participants are ranked on a public leaderboard. The ranking system uses a three-tier tiebreaking mechanism to ensure that every participant gets a fair and unique rank:

1st

Total Score (Primary Criterion)

Participants are first sorted by their total score in descending order. The higher your score, the higher your rank. This is the most important factor.

2nd

Number of Correct Answers (First Tiebreaker)

If two or more participants have the same total score, the one with more correct answers is ranked higher. This ensures that participants who attempted and answered more questions correctly are rewarded over those who played it safe.

3rd

Completion Time (Second Tiebreaker)

If the score and correct count are still tied, the participant who completed the quiz in less time is ranked higher. This rewards quick thinking and decisiveness while maintaining accuracy.

How Winners Are Determined

The winner of each quiz is the participant who ranks first on the leaderboard after applying all tiebreaking criteria. Here are some important details about how winners and prizes are handled:

  • Single Winner: In most cases, a single participant will have the highest rank and win the full prize amount.
  • Prize Splitting: In the rare case where multiple participants are perfectly tied across all three ranking criteria (same score, same correct count, same completion time), the prize is split equally among the tied participants.
  • Automatic Determination: Winners are determined automatically by our system after the quiz ends. There is no manual selection or bias in the process.
  • Verification: Before payouts are processed, the winner's account is verified for compliance with our platform rules and Terms and Conditions.

Quiz Format and Rules

Every practice test on KIDB follows a consistent format to ensure all students know what to expect:

Question Format Multiple choice with four options per question
Time Per Question Each question has a fixed countdown timer (typically 15-30 seconds, varies by quiz)
Question Delivery Questions are presented one at a time in sequential order
Skipping You can skip any question. Skipped questions score 0 points
Going Back You cannot go back to previous questions once you move forward
Timer Expiry If the timer expires, the question is automatically marked as unanswered
Results Results and leaderboard are published after the quiz ends

Practice Makes Perfect

The best way to improve your PSC exam performance is to study questions from past practice tests. Our Question Bank contains all questions from completed tests, complete with correct answers and detailed explanations.

Reviewing past questions helps you understand the difficulty level, identify common PSC topics, and learn from mistakes. Many of our top-scoring students credit their success to regular practice with the Question Bank.
